Hypnosis and its derivative, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of a lot of misconceptions created by layman’s imagination. Some consider them to be some sort of spell while others refuse to even recognize their existence. Following are some of the well known misconceptions about hypnosis and the reality behind them.

There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. It is a very simple technique, which can be understood without much difficulty with the help of psychology and other scientific methods. The authenticity of hypnosis is suspected even by people who have seen it casting its spell on subjects. They say that hypnotised people allow practitioners to be successful in their art by not displaying enough will power to withstand the effect of their words. But nothing could be more distant from the truth. Hypnosis can in fact be successfully practised on people who are mentally strong and are trying their best to avoid the spell.

That hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness is another misconception that has been doing the rounds. A hypnotized individual is totally conscious of his surroundings. During the hypnotic state, the subject calms down completely and is therefore able to focus fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.

Another myth, which has been propagated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can be applied on merely 5% of the human population. Although, the research has some shred of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the researchers made use of the same hypnosis procedure for everyone. Hypnosis can’t be straight jacketed like that and works only if there are different approaches for different characters.

Many people consider hypnosis to be a form of meditation. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and normally has nothing to do with communication. Similarly, a period of trance is also sometimes equated with hypnosis, which is not correct. The individual doesn’t interact to achieve a state of trance, whereas hypnosis is not possible without communication.

It is commonly believed that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot bring transformations in physique or in behavioural patterns of an individual. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is unnatural to the body. But by mentally conditioning a person to give up addictive habits like overeating and constant smoking, and by raising one’s inspiration levels, hypnosis can bring about significant physical alterations in a person and pave the way for a healthier body.

If a person believes in all the misconceptions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself burn the bridge to a happier and healthier life.
