Dr Rashid Buttar has a constant battle with the North Carolina Medical Board over his clinic and its work. He believes they are trying to keep the court cases running in the hopes of diminishing his money to a state where he cannot afford to run the clinic any longer. There are many doctors who support his work and do whats best for their patients and let them pick the best course of action for them about treatment.

That aside, Dr Buttar pushes on to help as many patients as he can, and with a great deal of success. Hes had some great recoveries from cancer and his DVD: Cancer-The Untold Truth is one in a series of discs called “Know Your Options”. His philosophies on healing certainly includes prevention is better than cure. But as most people never think about illness until it happens to them, he advocates that dealing with 7 toxicity problems in our bodies, allows the body to function as it should and heal itself.

He maintains that according to conventional medical literature, most cancer is cause by some type of toxicity causing the immune system damage and yet Chemo, Radiation, and surgery do not take care of the immune system. Also, surprisingly, Dr Buttar says many cancer patients actually die from malnutrition, but nothing is really addressed as far as keeping the correct nutrients up to the body during treatments.

He does thorough work with Autistic children, and is having a dramatic effect on their quality of life and that of their families. Other conditions he treats on a regular basis are:

* Hepatitis

* Auto Immune Condition

* Cancer

* Stroke

* Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue

* Heart Disease

* Peripheral Vascular Disease

* Hypertension

* Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders

* Alzheimer’s Disease

* Diabetes

* Diabetes

Quite a comprehensive list. The world is certainly a better place for people like Dr Buttar. He not only gives hope but he gives quality of life, that is a gift that just cant be beaten.

Fruit, Vegetables & Cancer

Despite the fact that no basis can be found proving that any single food is capable of causing cancer, there is a great deal of evidence that certain kinds of foods can protect us against cancer. As a generic food group, fruit and vegetables should be eaten at least 5 times a daily. While many American and European doctors recommend5, they do so because they feel that 5 is a manageable number, yet 8 is more realistic and some doctors even recommend 8 vegetables and 3 fruits.

However, whatever the number of fruit and vegetables that should be eaten a daily, most of the cancer studies agrees that the level of cancer is low when the intake of fruit and vegetables is high. Equally important is the fact that there is no recorded study any where in the world that has blamed a single case of cancer on a fruit or a vegetable.

Initially, the antioxidant effect was considered responsible for the protection that fruit and vegetables seem to confer on vegetarians. The antioxidant nutrients in fruits and vegetables prevent oxidative damage to the cells and DNA by free radicals, and they prevent the initiation of damage that starts the cancer in the first place.

There is a strong suggestion that these nutrients also protect the lipids which are present in the cellular membranes, and may help to the stabilization of cells. Also they may have a wide variety of chemical components that play a very active part in the overall protection against cancer, but research into this area is relatively new. The promotion of certain types of food that have been called super foods has arisen because of a marketing technique, rather than science. The growth of the use of food to promote health and reduce the risk of disease has led to the rapid development of these foods.

Blueberries and bilberries or Vaccinium myrtillus, contains anthocyanin. These specific nutrients make up the dark blue purple color and they are found in many foods of a similar color. Bilberry can protect against damage from radiation and it strengthens the capillaries.

However, bilberries or any other berry is not a super food and cannot give more protection than eating a wide range of fruit and vegetables. Even if you eat a kilo of bilberries it is still only one fruit from a nutrition point of view. Increasing the amount of unprocessed food such as fruit and vegetables, wholegrain cereals nuts and seeds will confer a greater health benefit than concentrating on the miracle qualities of Tropical rain forest berries.

There is moderately strong evidence that stomach and colorectal cancers occur less in communities that routinely eat over 500g of fruit and vegetables a day. There is less strong evidence that the same levels of fruit and vegetables protect against esophagus breast and lung cancers.

The word yoga is derived based from the ancient language known as Sanskrit, and it means Union. It is an influence in the Darsana School. It is one of the 6 darshans, the orthodox systems of Indian philosophy; although its influence pervades many Indian philosophies. The original yoga scripts date back to around the second Century BC when they were written by Patajali. Early Hindu Vedic texts speak of ecstatic, who may have been the predecessors of yogis or followers of yoga. Patajali’s Yoga is sometimes known as Raja or Royal Yoga, to denote its superiority over other schools.

Nowadays, Hindus believe that all things that are living are trapped in a cycle of death and rebirth, which the West refers to as reincarnation and they call samsara. When they have successfully broken this cycle, they have achieved the state of moksha meaning liberation, and yoga is an essential practice in that liberation.

Today yoga has a more practical application and that is primarily focused on the physical practice of yoga, though its basic remiss is still the existence of a spiritual being or god. Yoga practitioners want to acquire spiritual liberation through the state of Samadhi, especially from the bondage of matters when the sense of self can achieve its original pure state. Samadhi is a sense of profound concentration which brings about spiritual release.

The practice of yoga is a process of eight linear stages rather than a single act. Before physically practicing yoga, there are certain ethical preparations to follow. The first is yama or restraint, which is an abstinence from physical injury (ahimsa), as well as lies, stealing, lust, and avarice; and the second stage is niyama or observance, which denotes a clean body, austerity, contentment, and devotion to God.

The next stage is physical designed to make our body more flexible, Asana or the seat, a series of exercises to stretch the physical posture, and make it supple and healthy. Masters in asana are able to hols the prescribed stretching postures without physical distractions or involuntary movement. Pranayama or breath control is a vital stage in achieving respiratory relaxation by stabilizing the breathing rhythm.

The next stage, pratyahara means withdrawal. It aims to achieve control of the senses, by being able to ignore sensory inputs and retreat to an area of the brain.These five stages are known collectively as the external aids to Yoga, and the last three are internal ones.

The following stage is Dharana or holding on. It is the ability to hold in the mind an object of meditation, such as the tip of the nose or an image of the deity. Dhyana or concentrated meditation is the uninterrupted contemplation of the object of meditation. The final Samadhi or self-collectedness is the release from the cycle of being reborn and this is achieved when the mediator is the same as the object of his thoughts.

Yoga became increasingly popular outside of India in the last hundred years. Today the tuition is available in many non- sectarian classes as well as the sectarian classes.

Many oncologists are doctors who treat cancer believing that patients should be evaluated for fatigue when undergoing treatment. Fatigue often means that patients have to give up many activities that could be considered normal, because they are too tired to work. There is an argument that you should be discussing your levels of fatigue with your oncologists. They should be providing the initial screening, because they can provide the basic education that those levels of fatigue lead to pain, loss of sleep, emotional disturbances, hypothyroidism and anemia.

If any of those 5 primary symptoms of fatigue are present they need to be treated within the guidelines of the practice of each subject. Further assessment can include a review of the system of treatment and a total review of all medications, metabolic evaluations and an accurate assessment of current physical activity levels.

There are certain symptoms of fatigue such as electrolyte imbalances, infection and cardiac dysfunction that needs specific treatments but when these are not present then there are non-pharmacological options of treatment. These can include hypnosis to manage the pain, and improve the mood, and aid sleep. This can be in conjunction with a moderate gentle exercise program designed to make activity more tolerable.

Many cancer patients use hypnosis to alleviate their symptoms, but it is estimated that few of them discuss the results of alternative treatment with their oncologists. Many discuss it as a primary option, but once hypnosis is underway it is not discussed again. In fact it should be discussed and incorporated into a regime to manage your levels of fatigue as you undergo treatment. This is because the exact cause of fatigue in cancer patients has not been isolated.

A research study in Pakistan studied one hundred and ninety-one patients (1994) who each had a twenty five minute interview to assess how many of them used alternative therapies. Pakistan is a developing country, 54.5% of all patients used alternative therapies as part of their treatment. Traditional herbal medicines accounted for 70.2% and homeopathy was used by 64.4%. What was interesting is the fact that 36% or just over a third of the people used these treatments before conventional treatment was sought.

Only 15% used alternative methods after conventional therapeutic treatment options had been exhausted. Patients perceived that these treatments were less expensive. They have the different problems. The belief in Western therapies is not sufficient, that cancer patients will not use alternative therapies first, thus wasting a great deal of time before employing proven methods of treatment. However a recent American Cancer Society survey revealed that mind therapy which included mental imagery, hypnosis was employed by 49% of the users.

Obviously in Pakistan, dangerous consequences of using unconventional therapies instead of medical treatment mean direct physiological harm and needless deaths, but there has to be a happy medium of using alternative therapies with the full knowledge of your oncologist who is supposed to be coordinating your treatment.
