In our town where I grew up, a friend of our family started his own medical practice several years back when I was still young. He was a bachelor and I remember how all the single women in town were all gaga over him! He was a prized possession of the town, ruggedly handsome in his looks of blue eyes and curly blond hair. Dr. G would come to the house to ‘hide’ out and get some rest between working and his very active social life, and after one of my mother’s home cooked meals, he would crash in the guest room. As he dozed off in bed, I would play with his stethoscope, the one that he carried in his bag. I asked permission of course. I was always fascinated by it and ‘listened’ to my doll’s heart and practiced on my cat, and for just a while, I was the ‘doctor’ in the house. The stethoscope was created in 1816 by Dr. Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec. Back then, I didn’t know that. Way before the existence of the stethoscope, those who practiced medicine would simply use their ears literally on the surface of the patient’s chest or back in order to listen the beating of the heart and the air flowing through the lungs. Many times, he made professional and social calls at home at the same time. That was how doctors did in the old days. During our younger years, he made us drink a ‘hot toddy’, as simple as that, for our colds or flu every now and then. It was a mixture of hot tea and wine. I’m not sure if he also put a small amount of vapor rub salve on the top (do not do this at home). Although the taste was awful, it was very effective because the next morning we felt better. It still puzzles me which among the components – brandy, vapor rub, or herb tea, caused our improvement, or perhaps the whole mixture itself. Also, I believe that his kindness and compassion was a great factor in the healing process.
Way back then, it was different. You can only see the doctors in their clinics. On the other hand, lest there are emergencies, they can still quickly respond to it because they always carry their medical bags. The ongoing quest for knowledge and scientific advancements have aided doctors in their practice and help patients receive possibly the best medical treatment ever. The basic apparatus you see in nursing homes, hospitals and mobile units is similar with what doctors use. It can even be an addition to your emergency kit you have at home.
For sure, if you are standing inside one of your examination rooms, you can’t help but imagine all the latest medical equipments and supplies you need such as stethoscopes, blood pressure gauges, instrument trays, lighting equipments and that common stool chair on rollers.
