There are 4000 different species of cockroach in the world. Only three, however, are known to infest our homes and workplaces and cause problems. Some other species of cockroach are similar, but can be found in the home less often than these three. Every cockroach is slightly varied and has its own special characteristics. Nonetheless they are all pests and can cause great health risks and damage to us and our families.

Distinguishing these roaches could be the first step in eradication and control. It is pretty easy and can aid in extermination techniques. The following are the three major common cockroaches.

American Cockroach

The American cockroach has a reddish brown color and single stripe on the head. It can grow up to 25mm in length. These roaches get easily attracted to liquor. Therefore, they are often found in bars or at home after party where wine, beer and alcohol was present. They have a life span of up to 1 and half years. Their incubation period is from 6 to 8 weeks.

German Cockroach

The German cockroach has 2 lighter stripes on the back of its head, and sport a brownish or tan color. They can grow up to lengths of 15mm. It is probably breeds the fastest among the cockroaches, giving birth to around 30 to 40 nymphs with an incubation period of 30 days. At this rate, one cockroach can multiply into 30,000 in a year’s time. These can live for around 6 months.

Oriental Cockroach

Among these 3, the Oriental cockroach is probably the biggest. It grows approximately 25mm in length. They are a dark brown or black color with a shiny body and move generally slower than the other cockroaches. They are sometimes called the “waterbug” because they like to live in damp, dark areas. They are most likely seen in damp mulch or cellars. Incubation can last 2 months with about 15 eggs hatching and they can each live for up to 2 years.
