There’s no competition quite like physically combative competition. Things like Tae-kwon-do and karate, even in sparring, require intense concentration. Often, people are looking for a secret, something that they haven’t considered to make them better.

Self-defense remains one of the most important skills to have, especially in world that is become increasingly physically hostile. You need to protect the most important thing that you have – your life. Without it, the rest is meaningless.

For the Buddhists, that is the “Circle of Life”, or their life force. This permeates us and is a part of us. This space is important to kick boxing and is part of martial arts training.

Karate, made by Buddhists, is the source of the “Circle of Life”, or at least its earliest known incarnation, which directly ties it to martial arts.

Monks were forced to create karate to defend themselves as they resided in the Tibetan mountain range. Bandits would often raid their monasteries because they were thought to be defenseless.

The area covered by the Circle of Life can easily be discovered. All you need to do is to find your reach – you need to find what your legs and your arms can reach. Just stretch your arms and legs and see what area it covers when you movie it around. Make sure to stretch as far as you can so you can see it for its entirety.

This area? This area you’ve just figured out? It’s that Circle of Life we’ve been talking about. Nothing should get inside there that you don’t want. If you don’t want something there, you keep it out of there. You fight to protect that area. That area is yours and yours alone.
